Fine Art - Unnatural Bodies
This series of portraits features a group of women with breast cancer whose bodies have been radically altered through surgery. All have had single or double mastectomies. Some have had reconstructions. Others have chosen not to reconstruct at all or been unable to. In a world where we are continually bombarded with idealised images of unobtainable bodies, these women have fought to rebuild their self-image on new terms. I hope the photographs demonstrate that, in spite of the radical changes each woman’s body has endured, they are still whole, real, beautiful women.
These women met through an internet forum for women with breast cancer called BCPals. In this virtual space they find support, information, humour and a place to vent all the stuff that families, work colleagues and those who haven't been through cancer can find hard to understand.
The BCPals web forum is open to all women with breast cancer.
